Native Plants
Good for Your Garden, Good for the Environment
A discussion of native plant use among horticulturalists will often evoke many emphatic opinions. The use of native plants and appreciation of the importance of this practice has gained impressive momentum in recent years. Vivid Botanicals believes it is important to clearly assess the contributions native plants offer your garden while affirming our commitment to making “one footprint matter”.
Are native plants right for my garden?
As defined by the U.S. National Arboretum, a native plant is one that occurs naturally in a particular region, ecosystem or habitat without direct or indirect human intervention. We consider the flora present at the time Europeans arrived in North America as the species native to the eastern United States. Native species include all kinds of plants, from mosses and ferns to wildflowers, shrubs and trees.
Vivid is committed to performing service in good stewardship of both your property and our environment in New York City. As responsible gardeners, the importance of proper plant use has never been more critical. In the Northeast, growth habits of invasive plants (such as loosestrife, bamboo and Euonymus) can easily convert your well-manicured garden into a showcase of just a few species -- and not necessarily the ones you’ve waited to enjoy. Vivid creates plant palettes which consider appropriate native plant use; that is to say, when the native species is “the right plant for the right location,” native plants are specified.
Vivid carefully selects plants that will thrive within the garden area while not destroying their neighbors or surrounding environment. This practice allows propagation and nurturing of a healthy garden while supporting the natural ecology over the long term.
