Integrated Pest Management

What is Integrated Pest Management, or IPM?

In a rather generic sense, integrated pest management, or IPM, is the environmentally sensitive practice of pest and weed management, absent the use of harmful chemical and/or synthetic pesticides. Rather, IPM programs encourage healthy garden colonies of insects that abate the regeneration of plant-damaging insects. The principles of IPM allow us, as a community, to accept the likelihood that damaging insects (aka pests) and conquering weeds will continue to exist, but we can integrate our plantings with an abundance of defense mechanisms such as earthworms, ladybugs and butterflies, which naturally minimize the reproduction of harmful infestations.

We take great pride in our strictly organic IPM programs. Gone are the days of treating pests at the cost of poisoning ourselves and our environment. Exposure to pesticides has been linked to a long list of health concerns, as pesticides contaminate the air, water, soil, plants and animals around us. Thankfully, and to the credit of concerned environmentalists, disease-resistant plant material is available, the use of non-invasive material is becoming a preferred and respected practice. With the support of the scientific community, healthy, organic and affordable treatments are both affordable and readily available through reputable industry professionals.

 * Certification pending: IPM Certification ensures the principles and practices applied within your property, including problem identification, monitoring techniques and pest management strategies are compliant with the City of New York Landscape Guidelines. Certificate completion projected for March 2012.

If panic sets in when you come across an unsightly invader, please refrain from spraying harmful and environmentally damaging chemicals. The “pest” may be a natural promoter of a healthy garden environment.
